Philippi, population 2,870, is the county seat of Barbour County, located in the north central portion of West Virginia on U.S. Routes 119 and 250.

Chartered in 1844, Philippi is the site of the first land battle of the Civil War, an event commemorated in the annual "Blue and Gray" historical re-enactment. Sections of Philippi have been awarded "historic district" status.

Philippi has established planning and housing authorities annexed adjacent residential and business areas and a housing development. The city continues to upgrade utilities, streets, sidewalks and curbing. Philippi has been designated an "All West Virginia Community" by the state Chamber of Commerce each year for more than a decade, and in 1991 won first place in the All-West Virginia Community for cities of its size. Philippi was selected to receive the All-America City Award in June 2004.
