Philippi, population 2,870, is the county seat of Barbour County, located in the north central portion of West Virginia on U.S. Routes 119 and 250. Chartered in 1844, Philippi is the site of the first land battle of the Civil War, an event commemorated in the annual "Blue and Gray" historical re-enactment. Sections of Philippi have been awarded "historic district" status.
