Population Trends

In 1950 Barbour County had a population of 19,745 residents. The 2000 census population was 15,557 residents representing a 21 percent decrease. However, over this time span, Barbour County's population has fluctuated, growing in the 1970s and decreasing in the 1980s. The 2010 population estimate was 15,983, a 2.7% increase since the census. (WVU Regional Research Institute Population Projeections - http://www.rri.wvu.edu/wvpop4.htm) The up and down economy of the coal industry is largely responsible for much of the population shifts. However, Philippi with a population hovering around 3,000 residents has remained stable for the last three decades.

The following table shows current population projections for Barbour County. (WVU Regional Research Institute Population Projections)
