Table B compares age distribution of Philippi to Barbour County to the State of West Virginia and the United States. The retired population in Philippi is a prominent component of the community. During the planning process, the retired citizens were noted for providing a significant impact on the community in terms of visibility, influence in decision making, and services designed for the group. While retirees 65 and older may be very active and influential, the actual percentage of population is 18%. However, this percentage is higher than the county's at 16%, the state's at 15% and the nation's at 12%.

The median age of Philippi is 32.2 years, which is less than that of the nation's median age of 32.8 years.
